How Did Derby Pie Get Its Name?
Originally created by a family in Prospect, Kentucky, this pie is often associated with the Kentucky Derby, thus inheriting part of its name from this famous horse race. But why? The story is that after many attempts at perfecting the recipe, the creators of the pie asked their family members to help name it. Because the various family members each had a different name for the creation, they decided to resolve the dispute by putting all the names into a hat. The one they pulled out said “Derby Pie” and the rest is history!
This delicious confection is a delight for the mouth and is usually made with chocolate, walnuts or pecans and is served in a pie shell with a pastry dough crust.
