Jannie Teitelbaum, Owner of Great Lakes Pot Pies

I like to keep busy whether it’s volunteering, an art project, working out, cooking, or spending time with family and friends or whatever. I was starting to get bored and felt the need to do something productive. It was time to start a new business. I’ve had other small businesses before and always wanted to do something with food. I started making up recipes for “healthy bars”. I thought this was going to be it. But then I also started recipes for “pot pies”. When I spoke with friends about it they thought the bars were a good idea but “WE NEED DINNER”. And that was it!


I spent many hours looking through pot pie recipes, mostly chicken. I printed many of them and started writing up my own. I wanted to make mine healthier than the others but still good. I also spent a lot of time figuring out the crust. After about 1 year of obsessing over what should be included in my recipe, I finally made one for my older son, Steven, in August 2015. It was a rainy day and we were the only ones home. I drove to the grocery store to get my ingredients, not realizing this was going to be my life soon.

When Steven tried the chicken pot pie he couldn’t believe how good it was. I think he was as surprised as I was. I loved chicken pot pie, “CPP”, growing up and tried to get that same flavor that I remembered. I sold my first pie to my friend, Deb B., at the end of September 2015. The rest is history!

I came up with the name “Great Lakes Pot Pies”, since I live with my family in southeastern Michigan. I wanted to make sure the pies had great flavor but were healthier than others. My other objective was to make a convenient meal for people. So I had a website made and a new logo for my business.

I’d wake up in the middle of the night thinking about changes I needed to make to the recipe and couldn’t wait to try it. I also figured out that I wanted to freeze the pies so they could stay in the freezer for months and be pulled out when needed.

I thank everyone, and you know who you are, for all your support and listening to me obsess about whether or not I had too much seasoning or too much or little gravy and how to fix it. It’s worth all the hard work when someone tells me they had a pie in the freezer on a snowy, cold night and had a delicious, hot dinner for their family. Thank you all!!
